Rosemount Estate - McLaren Vale Australien

16 Fahrstunden westlich von Sydney in New South Wales.

Rosemount Estate - McLaren Vale Australien:
Cellar Door
Rosemount Estate Cellar Door is situated within the oldest winery building in McLaren Vale. The property was originally named ‘Hope Farm’ and was established in 1850. Over the years, the property expanded. By 1891, it was renamed Hope Vineyards with over 70 acres under vine, including Shiraz, Cabernet and Mataro. Over the years the property has had many different owners, and many different names. In 1950 it was called ‘Seaview Winery’, as the sea can be seen beyond the vines from the lawns around the cellar door. McLaren Vale became home to Rosemount Estate in 2001, when the cellar door was established in the historic building. It’s in this space that we showcase the wines that have made Rosemount Estate famous; the iconic Diamond Label, Flagship Balmoral Syrah and GSM. There are also cellar door exclusives, back vintages as well as our newly released collections that are offered for tastings daily. We welcome small groups and offer tastings in our charming barrel hall by appointment only.

Since its establishment in 1974, Rosemount Estate has built a strong Australian and international reputation for producing high-quality wines. Freshness, vibrancy and great drinkability are the qualities that Rosemount Estate promises in every bottle. We make wines that are easy-drinking, full of luscious flavours and are ready to enjoy now. The 1975 vintage delivered the spark that set the Rosemount story ablaze. With a full-flavoured, easy drinking wine style that would evolve into the company’s hallmark character over coming years, the wines picked up medal after medal in wine shows around the country.

Our winemaking team has an unpretentious attitude to winemaking and a commitment to quality. This approach underpins all of our Rosemount wines, from our world-renowned Rosemount Estate Diamond Label, to the MV Collection from McLaren Vale right through to our flagship tiers, including Rosemount Estate Balmoral Syrah and GSM.

Chardonnay was the world’s favourite white wine grape variety in the early 1980s, which coincided with Rosemount’s 1980 Show Reserve Chardonnay winning a rare Double Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London, England. Rosemount’s multi-award winning Chardonnay quickly established the company’s reputation for quality in Australia and overseas.

The accolades soon extended beyond Chardonnay. In 1999, Rosemount Estate was awarded Winery of the Year at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. In 2000, Rosemount Estate was awarded Winemaker of the Year and Best Australian Producer at the IWSC in London and Best Australian Producer at the International Wine Challenge (IWC). These early accolades were followed up in 2011 with New World Winery of the Year from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. As the Rosemount Estate range evolved, the winemaking team were sourcing more and more fruit from McLaren Vale, a region which was an essential part of Rosemount since the 1980s.

In 1991, Rosemount purchased the 100-year-old Ryecroft winery and vineyards and Rosemount’s focus on McLaren Vale grew. Rosemount Estate continues to source fruit from these vineyards today.

RANDALL CUMMINS
Winemaker
Growing up on a wheat farm at Lock on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, Randall was not exposed to much of the wine industry, (although his family were enthusiastic consumers). With a keen interest in farming and science, Randall chose to complete a week’s work experience at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute. After realising that Agricultural Science was not for him, Randall began to spend lunch breaks reading books about wine in the library. Waite was home to the Australian Wine Research Institute, and was soon to become the home of the viticulture courses. From here the seeds of Randall’s future career were sown. The course began, and from the moment the first wine was made, Randall was hooked. During this time, Randall worked in vineyards in McLaren Vale, doing a variety of jobs. Coincidently, many of the vineyards he worked on delivered fruit to Rosemount Estate. Randall was lucky enough to be employed by Southcorp as part of the graduate program in 2000 and completed vintages at Rouge Homme in Coonawarra and Penfolds in the Barossa Valley. From there, he moved to the Hunter Valley to start work for Rosemount Estate in 2002. Randall immediately felt at home in the easy going, vibrant environment. Every year, a large contingent of people would come from all over the world, each with different perspectives, allowing him to broaden his knowledge and appreciation for wine. Among other things, Randall completed a vintage in California working as part of a partnership between Rosemount Estate and Robert Mondavi. Randall has been fortunate enough to play with some wonderful fruit while spearheading the District Release range. Rosemount Estate has received a number of accolades for these wines, the highlight being the ‘Wine of Show’ at the 2013 McLaren Vale Wine Show for the 2012 District Release McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon. Randall feels lucky to be working with great people and great resources to make great wines that are richly flavoured, accessible and most importantly, fun! Randall believes this is one of Rosemount Estate’s greatest virtues: understanding that wine is about enjoyment. Where else could a long lunch on a beautiful spring day be regarded as work?

TREVOR TUCKER
Winemaker
Trevor started out life on a fruit property in the South Australian Riverland before his parents moved to Adelaide, where he grew up and received his education. After qualifying as a pastry chef, he worked in the industry for 11 years before the call to the land returned in 1987 and resulted in a change of career to the wine industry. Trevor spent several years working in and managing vineyards in the Adelaide Hills while gaining experience in boutique winemaking and completing a winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University. McLaren Vale beckoned in 1994 and Trevor began working in the area, gaining valuable experience as winemaker at Andrew Garret, Ingoldby and Maglieri Wines. He was able to work internationally, completing four vintages in Italy and Bulgaria, and also spent some time as a winemaking consultant. In 2008, Trevor joined the Rosemount Estate winemaking team. He particularly enjoys working with the magnificent quality fruit and plethora of alternative varieties that find their way to the Rosemount Estate winery, along with experimenting in innovative winemaking techniques. After only six years with the Rosemount Estate family, Trevor already has a fine body of work behind him and a world of vinous possibilities ahead.

VAUGHAN COOKE
Grower Liason Officer
Growing up on a family grazing property in the upper reaches of the Hunter Valley, Vaughan has always enjoyed the connection between the land and its produce. Rosemount Estate has an inclusive approach to winemaking and viticulture and Vaughan enjoys following the journey of the grapes from the vineyard through to the resulting wine. After being offered a position with Rosemount Estate in 1997, Vaughan went to work on the Roxburgh Vineyard between Muswellbrook and Denman in the Hunter Valley. The time spent on Roxburgh clearly demonstrated the importance of aspect, soils and geology to viticulture. In 2009, Vaughan moved from the Hunter Valley to McLaren Vale. The change in winegrowing region illustrated once again the impact of soils and geology. The importance of regionality and diversity has been a particularly important aspect of McLaren Vale’s regional marketing. Rosemount Estate sources fruit from the estate vineyards surrounding the Rosemount Estate Cellar Door, as well as a number of grower vineyards throughout McLaren Vale and South Australia. As a Grower Liaison Officer, Vaughan enjoys being able to interact with the individual growers and their vineyards during the season in order to produce the best quality fruit. His favourite wines are the Rosemount Estate Nursery Series Fiano, MV Collection Cabernet Sauvignon, GSM and Single Vineyard Shiraz Grenache.

JONATHAN SHEARER
Vineyard Manager
Jonathan Shearer (commonly known as ‘Jono’) has been with the Rosemount Estate viticulture team since 2012. After growing up not far from the McLaren Vale wine region, Jono spent 12 years working in a range of wine regions in Australia and the USA before coming back to his roots in 2012. Jono was raised on the land and decided at a young age that working outdoors was important. Viticulture combines a love of nature and sustainable farming practices with the challenges from Mother Nature. Every season is different, and for Jono, it’s the drive to grow the perfect grapes for winemakers to craft the perfect wine that makes this industry so much fun to work in. Fresh out of school, Jono commenced a Bachelor of Agriculture (Viticulture) at the University of Adelaide. Amongst studying, playing indoor cricket and a healthy dose of partying, Jono worked with Hardy’s and Richard Hamilton Wines in his university breaks, learning vineyard operator tasks such as pruning, netting, harvesting and tractor operations. In 1999, Jono combined his final semester with a full-time Technical Officer position with Australian Vintage in the warm climate of the Riverland, based in Loxton. He graduated from university and continued at Australian Vintage for two and a half years. Jono then changed to cooler climate viticulture joining Southcorp Wines in Padthaway. He was soon promoted to Vineyard Manager of a 115Ha vineyard in Tumbarumba, NSW, where snow in November made vineyard management challenging, but provided excellent cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sparkling fruit for Seppelt and Yellowglen. Jono was subsequently rewarded with a stint in the warm climate of Heathcote, tending to large vineyards of premium Shiraz bound for Penfolds and Seppelt. After nine years, four Australian wine regions, three states (and child born in each state completing his family), he set off with the family to USA. After a crash course in Imperial measurement and Spanish, Jono found growing wine grapes in California a fantastic experience. It was in 2012 that Jono returned home to join the Rosemount Estate viticulture team as Vineyard Manager of 440 hectares of vineyard in McLaren Vale. His favourite wines are Rosemount Estate Balmoral Shiraz, GSM and the Single Vineyard Series ‘Q Block’ Cabernet Sauvignon.
