Das Weingut Henschke Cellars ist öffentlich zugänglich! Ein Besuch mit Wein-Tasting ist sicher eines der Highlights im Barossa und Eden Valley.

Zur Geschichte des australischen Weinguts Henschke Cellars:
Das Weingut HENSCHKE CELLARS - mit seinen heutigen 120 Hektar Weinrebenfläche - gehört mit über 155 Jahren Winzer-Tradition zu den ältesten Familienweingütern im Weinanbaugebiet Eden Valley in Südaustralien. Der Henschke-Cellar-Door wurde bereits in den 1860igern von JOHANN CHRISTIAN HENSCHKE (Bild ganz oben links mit Ehefrau Dorothea Elisabeth), der sich 1841 im Barossa Valley ansiedelte, erbaut. Der erste kommerzielle Henschke-Wein-Jahrgang war der 1868er. In absehbarer Zeit wird evt. der Weinkeller und der Cellar-Door von Henschke renoviert; auf dem Bild ein Beispiel wie es in Zukunft aussehen könnte.

Mit dem erfahrenen Kellermeister STEPHEN CARL HENSCHKE, Sohn von CYRIL HENSCHKE, leitet seit 1979 in 5. Generation ein bestausgewiesener Fachmann (auch ausgebildet in Geisenheim, Deutschland) das Henschke Cellars Weinunternehmen sehr weitsichtig. Für die gesamten Henschke-Rebberge ist seine sehr sympathische Frau PRUE zu 100% zuständig. Traditionelle Weinbereitung steht hier nicht im Widerspruch zu modernen Keltertechniken. Beides wird gepflegt, wo es sinnvoll ist. Die erste Vergärung erfolgt nach uralter Tradition in offenen Tanks. Die Henschke Weine – nuancenreich, elegant und dennoch kraftvoll – bestätigen diese Auffassung.

Auch Stephen und Prue`s Kinder sind mittlerweile im erfolgreichen Henschke Weinbusiness involviert. Johann Henschke, der Älteste, arbeitet seit seinem Abschluss als "Master in Viticulture and Oenology" im Jahre 2012 an der Seite seiner Eltern im Weinkeller und in den Rebbergen. Seine Schwester JUSTINE HENSCHKE übernahm 2015 den anspruchsvollen Job als Marketing & Public Relations Manager. Während der Jüngste, ANDREAS HENSCHKE, noch in der Ausbildung als Ingenieur seine Sporen abverdient. Seine Eltern sind zuversichtlich, dass auch er einmal im Henschke Cellars Weinunternehmen involviert sein wird.

Visiting the historic stone Henschke Cellar Door, builtin the 1860s by Johann Christian Henschke, is one of the most charming experiences in the Barossa. It’s a tiny cellar for an internationally acclaimed winery but in these intimate surrounds, tasting a line-up of beautiful wines, watched over by portraits of Henschke forebears, you will feel very connected to the six generations of family who have contributed to the success of Henschke. Henschke boasts a strong portfolio, with a focus on ultra-premium single-vineyard wines. The beautifully handcrafted wines from Eden Valley, Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills are available for purchase from Cellar Door and a selection of these wines are available for tasting.

Henschke is regarded as the best medium-sized red wine producer in Australia, Henschke has gone from strength to strength over the past three decades under the guidance of winemaker Stephen and viticulturist Prue Henschke. The red wines fully capitalise on the very old, low-yielding, high quality vines and are superbly made with sensitive but positive use of new small oak: Hill of Grace is second only to Penfolds Grange as Australias red wine icon (since 2005 sold with a screwcap). A founding member of Australias First Families of Wine. Exports to all major markets.

Fifth-generation Stephen Carl Henschke took over running the winery in 1979. Born in 1950, he was Cyril’s younger son and showed an interest in science and winemaking from an early age. Stephen completed a Bachelor of Science Degree at Adelaide University in 1973, gained winemaking experience in the Hunter Valley, and in 1975 with his wife Prue, spent two years at the Geisenheim Institute of Viticulture and Wine Technology in West Germany. During their stay in Germany he undertook work experience in two wineries, Winzerverein Oberrotweil in Baden and the Institut für "Rebenzüchtung und Rebenveredlung" in Geisenheim, Germany.

On their return to Australia they enrolled in Wine Science at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, in order to catch up with the changes in the Australian wine industry. During this time Stephen worked with his father at the winery in Keyneton while Prue embarked on a career as a technical research officer at the nearby Roseworthy College.

In the early 1980s, Stephen introduced winemaking techniques learned in Germany and upgraded to more flexible refrigeration in the winery in order to improve the Quality of the white wines. He maintained his ancestors traditional methods with his red wines, which focused on fruit quality and tannin maturity in the vineyard, submerged cap open fermentation, minimal racking, no fining and minimal filtration. He also began incorporating barrel fermentation as a component of his red Fermentation techniques. Because of the poorly seasoned oak at the time he introduced an oak timber purchase program, seasoning it in the Barossa in order to obtain better Quality mature oak flavours.

In the early 1980s, Stephen and Prue Henschke purchased an apple orchard at Lenswood in the cool-climate Adelaide Hills in order to pioneer viticultural and soil Management techniques from Germany. This led to using Vertical Shoot Positioned canopies to improve fruit exposure and the old-vine selection programs in the 100-year-old shiraz vineyards.

In 1988 and 1989 they worked vintages in Burgundy and Bordeaux respectively, in order to research the grass roots level of viticulture and winemaking in those regions. With widened perspectives they have forged their own styles, with much of the success of Henschke wines attributed to the vine Age and fruit quality in the vineyards. In 1994/95 the UK International Wine and Spirit Competition named them International Red Winemaker of the Year.

Stephen and Prue, with their three children Johann, Justine and Andreas, quietly continue a proud heritage and the philosophy for outstanding quality. They are mindful of the fact that more than 145 years of grapegrowing and winemaking, spanning six generations, has been an integral part of Australian quality wine history.
