Beschreibung
Rotwein Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz Australien 14,5 Vol.%

Der australische Rotwein Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz kommt handgelesen von 14. - 27.

WINEMAKERS NOTES Wayne Stehbens:
At the highest echelon, these Limited Release wines offer the absolute pinnacle of Katnook quality. Handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail and only in outstanding vintages, Katnook Estate Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz are renowned worldwide for their power and finesse. In addition - when vintage conditions are exceptional, exclusive Cellar Door Only wines are released in tiny quantities under the Amara and Caledonian labels. All limited release wines will age gracefully for many, many years.

Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz was first produced from young vines in 1997 and won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show in 1998. It has since become a favourite among wine collectors. The fruit is predominantly drawn from a single vineyard plot planted on classic terra rossa over limestone soils. Viticulture is highly detailed with precise canopy management.

Vintage Conditions:
2009 Coonawarra vintage was noted for the brief period of near record high temperatures in late February. The following cooler mild conditions provided an ideal ripening period producing Shiraz fruit at near optimum maturity. Katnook Prodigy is made from small parcels of grapes harvested from sites that have consistently produced fruit of outstanding depth of fruit flavour, excellent colour and firm tannin structures.

Cellaring Potential:
Suggested cellaring of our Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz – medium to long term - 10-20 years.

Food Matching:
The rich flavours of Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz will beautifully suit an oven-baked quail or dukkah crusted tuna steak served aside ratatouille and greens. Also the perfect accompaniment to a selection of hard cheeses with brioche, paté and plum paste.

Tasting Note:
Our Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz shows deep plum with crimson and purple hues. The Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz shows a rich and complex array of fruit, oak and subtle maturation aromas. Attractive raspberry and plum fruit with subtle liquorice, vanilla and light toast adding complexity to the fruit aromas. The Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz shows a richly layered palate structure with generous fruit, oak and maturation flavours seamlessly combined. Raspberry and plum fruit with sweet spices of liquorice and light pepper are a feature. Subtle oak with fine lingering tannins are in harmony with the well rounded palate structure.

11th Vintage Release Katnook Estate Prodigy.

Katnook Estate - Coonawarra Australia:
- Welcome to Katnook -
Katnook lies in the heart of the fabled Coonawarra region, South Australia. With a history stretching back to 1867, Katnook has three wines in the prestigious Langton’s Classification of Australian Wines, and a five -star rating in James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2016. Katnook is home to some of Australia’s finest terra rossa vineyards, as well as John Riddoch’s beautifully restored, historic limestone buildings.

Katnook Estate has a unique heritage. In 1861 a Scottish immigrant, John Riddoch, arrived at Penola in South Australia, prosperous from years of operating a trading post in the goldfields. Riddoch purchased vast parcels of land and over the years was impressed with the remarkable rate of growth of fruit trees and vines in the areas of soil with a distinctive red colour. He began buying land at Katnook a nearby property to his own which had similar rich red soil. (The name Katnook is aboriginal for fat land, denoting the rich fertile character of the country.) Determined to encourage closer settlement in the southeast, in 1890 Riddoch formed the Coonawarra Fruit Colony, set up its administration headquarters at Katnook Estate and sold off the land in 10 acre blocks. It was here at Katnook that Coonawarra was born.

Riddoch planted 140 acres of his own vines. His first vintage in 1895 was a low key event in a nearby nursery shed. His second, with a much greater volume of fruit and attended to by a qualified winemaker, William Salter, was made in his own woolshed at Katnook in 1896. By all accounts this second vintage gave an indication of the quality that was to come.

In 1971 the Yunghanns family purchased Katnook and planted their first vines. The family renamed the property Katnook Estate and formed the Coonawarra Machinery Company (now known as Wingara Wine Group). In 1980 production of wine under both the Riddoch and Katnook Estate labels commenced in the Katnook woolshed just as John Riddoch had done 84 years earlier.

VINEYARDS:
Lying in the heart of Coonawarra`s finest soils, Katnook’s vineyards are within the Limestone Coast GI (Geographic Indication) region of South Australia. Our vines are carefully nurtured by Senior Viticulturist Chris Brodie and his team. Chris is dedicated to cultivating grapes which optimise regional and varietal flavour, whilst minimising environmental impact.

Katnook’s 200 hectares include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinot Noir in the reds and white varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. New plantings include Malbec and Tempranillo highlight the diversity of Coonawarra’s terroir.

WINERY:
Katnook is rated 5 stars by world renouned wine writer, James Halliday - an accolade it has enjoyed for several decades. At the head of our winemaking team is senior winemaker Wayne Stehbens, who began in 1979 when Katnook Winery was reborn. With nearly 40 years of winemaking experience at Katnook and in the Coonawarra region, Wayne says, “Winemaking here is an exciting challenge each year. Nothing is static. Seasons, knowledge, markets, innovations, equipment and oak – they’re forever evolving”.

When describing his winemaking style, Wayne says “I aim to make wines which show subtlety, intrigue and complexity. Reflecting the essence of Coonawarra’s terroir is integral to my winemaking approach”. Wayne believes that “while Cabernet Sauvignon is the hero variety of the Coonawarra region, other red varietals are equally impressive. The white wines are similarly unique in character and world class in quality”.

In 2010, Riddoch’s historical ‘Woolshed’ was restored to its former glory and now features a micro winery for superior wine parcels and a basket press. Katnook currently crushes around 2,000 tonnes of fruit annually, all of which is grown on the Estate.
