Beschreibung
Rotwein Ataraxia Wines Serenity Südafrika 14,4 Vol.%

Der südafrikanische Rotwein Ataraxia Wines Serenity besteht aus den Traubensorten:
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Shiraz
- Merlot

WINEMAKERS NOTES: Kevin Grant
Kevin has just one goal for Ataraxia’s red blend – to have the confidence to “whisper” style through the ultimate expression of site rather than “shout” brashness though winemaking excesses. Consequently he does not focus on the cultivars that make up this blend and has never disclosed them. His quest is to show that “where from” is far more important than “what from” in achieving a particular wine style and that wine with a sense of place is the truest expression of its personality. Kevin has, however, always been excited at the notion of a seven, twelve, even fifteen variety blend, where the true art of blending is taken to its logical and comprehensive conclusion.

“I love the idea of being able to know instinctively that small percentages of certain varieties can impact the resultant blend in ways that are extremely subtle and almost indiscernible, yet without which the blend just comes up short of its real and true potential. It is not alchemy and it is certainly not just throwing a mixture together in a random, haphazard way. Rather it is a cerebral yet instinctive construction of a wine that transcends, sometimes in the most ethereal of ways, the potentially restrictive parameters of a single variety wine. Ataraxia may never embrace that large a number of varieties, but one thing is certain, it will always defer to the site from which the grapes originate, no matter how many varieties are used to make the wine.”
Serenity seduces, caresses and subtly occupies ones palate. It doesn’t ravage, batter and destroy!

The fruit used to make this Ataraxia Wines Serenity was sourced from radical and individual vineyard sites with one goal in mind – to have the confidence to whisper style through the true expression of these sites rather than shout brashness through winemaking excesses. This Ataraxia Wines Serenity is a seamless blend of two classic red Mediterranean varietals and because the emphasis is more on style than cultivar make-up, these remain unnamed. Cultivars are after all merely vehicles to express terroir and not the expression of a wine itself. Consequently this Ataraxia Wines Serenity continues to define the style introduced by the maiden vintage which has been embraced by wine aficionados all over the world.

The grapes were handpicked, sorted and crushed into open fermenters. Here they underwent cold maceration on their skins for seven days before completing fermentation and being pressed off to barrel where malolactic fermentation took place. Careful maturation in tightgrain French oak barriques, 35% of which were new, for a period of 12 months followed before the Ataraxia Wines Serenity was bottled in October. A further resting period of 29 months in bottle followed before deemed ready for release in March.

Wine Style
Great wines dont batter the palate but caress it. They first seduce through scent and fragrance and then suffuse the mouth. (Michael Schuster, Winewise).
A finely scented vibrant nose with beautifully lifted dark berry fruit and intriguing mineral and spicy notes characterise this Ataraxia Wines Serenity. Refined, polished tannins are wrapped in an elegant structure that subtly occupies all corners of ones palate. Ethereal, yet assertive; classic and lingering, it reflects the grasp of style and deft hand of its maker.

Jahres-Weinproduktion vom Weingut Ataraxia Wines in Südafrika: ca. 160`000 Weinflaschen.

Ataraxia Wines - Hemel-en-Aarde South Africa:
Ataraxia Wines was founded in 2004. Husband and wife team, Kevin and Hanli, in partnership with a few friends, purchased 50 hectares of prime vineyard land. The landscape in which Ataraxia is situated, called The Skyfields is unique, lying as it does on the most elevated section of the Hemel-en-Aarde area. Nestled on this commanding rise beneath the soaring BabylonsToren mountain range, our vineyards are planted on some of the most spectacular terroirs South Africa has to offer. It is a place where wines of incredible finesse, balance and depth are crafted, that proudly hold their own in the international arena.

ABOUT THE WINEMAKER
Viticulturist& Winemaker KEVIN GRANT:
Born in Malawi and schooled in Cape Town, Kevin graduated from the University of Pretoria with a B.Sc. Honours degree in Zoology. Always drawn to winemaking, he completed a diploma in Cellar Technology at Elsenburg Agricultural, graduating as Dux Student in 1990. While working at top-end estates in South Africa, he undertook study/harvest trips to France, Oregon, Australia and New Zealand.
The more pure the voice of the soil, the more interesting the wine.

Terroir
The Hemel en Aarde area lies within the Walker Bay wine appellation and is divided into 3 wards: ours being the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge to the west of Cape Agulhas, Africa’s southernmost tip. Orientated on an east/west axis, it is approximately 35 kilometres in length. A particularly mild climate is a result of close proximity to the icy South Atlantic Ocean. Fourteen soil types are derived from the deposits of Table Mountain Sandstone, Cape Granite and Bokkeveld Shale that make up the geology of the area. These deposits can be traced back over 1000 million years ago which means that we have the privilege of cultivating some of the most ancient soils on Earth. All our vineyards are planted on these elevated, predominantly south facing slopes.

Vines
Our soils dictate which grape cultivars we plant. After meticulous study and research, Kevin decided that the best vehicles to express our terroir were Chardonnay and Pinot noir. We currently have a total of 12 hectares planted equally to these two cultivars with a further 6 hectares of each planned for the future.

THE WINE LOUNGE
Ataraxias tasting room, The Wine Lounge Ataraxia Wines is situated on what has been described as surely one of the most spectacular and dramatic positions in the whole wine world. Built as a chapel in the vernacular architectural style of the region, it offers a place for relaxed contemplation of the three wines in our Ataraxia Wines range.

These are: an unwooded Sauvignon Blanc, a wooded Chardonnay and a red blend which we have called Serenity. The final member of the quartet, Pinot noir, will be added in the near future.
