Ausbau:
Dieser Rotwein Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red wurde mit modernsten Gärungs- und Vinifikations-Methoden verarbeitet. Hefekulturen mit spezifischen Eigenschaften wurden für den Gärungszyklus in Edelstahltanks verwendet. Der Ausbau fand während 9 Monaten in gebrauchten ungarischen, amerikanischen und französischen Eichen Weinfässern - Hungarian, American & thin-stave French Oak Barrels - statt.
Im Januar 2015 in Weinflaschen abgefüllt. Weinproduktion des kalifornischen Rotwein Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red: ca. 3500 Weinkisten.

WINEMAKERS NOTES Mark R. Lyon:
2013 was a fantastic vintage! Overall the weather was more moderate, which resulted in even ripening of the grapes and prime, richer flavor development. We also had higher yields due to the great weather. The Grapes were harvested September 14th to October 28th, 2013 at optimum ripeness due to the rain free Fall and Indian summer. We harvested all of the Grapes under clear night skies.

Our 2013 Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red is deep purplish to ruby in color. Ist nose is swarming with forward blackberry and coconut Wood aromatics that then reveal Bergamot tea, cassis, espresso and black olives. The palate has an attack of blackberry fruits followed by raspberry, underbrush tones and dried Herb de Provance. The finish is both Long and complex, but with nice Cabernet tannings framing the generous fruit. A perfect Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red wine to enjoy now or age over the upcoming years!

"The 2013 Sebastiani Gravel Bed Proprietary Red is a Bordeaux blend which I assume is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon. It Comes from the rockiest sites that Sebastiani owns in Sonoma County. is is a spectacular wine, with blueberry and blackberry fruit, some notes of gravel (as the Name suggests), full-bodied opulence, and a multi layered, almost skyscraper-like mouthfeel, yet Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red is light on its feet for such great intensity and richness. This is a stunner and another tour de force from winemaker Mark Lyon. is full-bodied classic should drink well for 25-30 years."

Das Weingut SEBASTIANI VINEYARDS & WINERY befindet sich im kalifornischen Weinanbaugebiet Sonoma County, gleich am Rande des Städtchens Sonoma, etwa 20 Minuten (14 Miles) westlich des Wein-Städtchens Napa und etwas weniger als eine Autostunde (45 Miles) nördlich von San Francisco.

Alle Weine von Sebastini können fast täglich von 10.00 - 17.00 Uhr im Tasting-Room & Visitor Center auf dem Weingut degustiert und eingekauft werden.
An hohen Feiertagen geschlossen!

Im Weingut-Restaurant sind kleine Häppchen und Lunch-Menus wie auch Käse- und Schokoladen-Spezialitäten - mit oder ohne Wein-Tasting - erhältlich. Das Restaurant und der grosse Weinkeller, mit einem der grössten Eichen Weinfässer der Welt (siehe Bild), kann für private Feste gebucht werden. Weinkellertouren und eine grosse Auswahl von interessanten Degustations-Events auf vorherige Reservation empfohlen. Sebastiani verfügt auch über einen WINE CLUB. Der CHERRYBLOCK-Wine Club ist von Montag bis Freitag von 8.00 - 17.00 Uhr geöffnet. Falls gut besetzt, nur für Members!

Zur Geschichte des kalifornischen Weinguts Sebastiani Vineyards:
Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery ist mit Gründungsjahr 1904 eine der ältesten Weinkellereien Kaliforniens!
Der 1895 aus Italien immigrierte SAMUELE SEBASTIANI (Bild ganz oben links) arbeite zuerst hart im Sonoma-Steinbruch-Geschäft, für die vielen benötigten Steinquader für die Strassen von San Francisco, bevor er in Sonoma ein Stück Land kaufen konnte und Weinreben pflanzte. Es war damals die erste Winery (Bild ganz oben Mitte) überhaupt im Sonoma County und somit hatte Samuele Sebastiani genügend Absatzmöglichkeiten für seine Weine in der näheren Umgebung, wie auch in den Restaurants von San Francisco. Er hat die Prohibition dank seinem Engagement in der katholischen Kirche und dem Verkauf von Messwein einigermassen überstanden. Ausserdem setzte er auf verschiedene Pferde und gründet um sich herum eine richtige Kommunity mit Motel, Theater, Rollschuhbahn, Restaurant, Früchteplantagen usw.

1944 verstarb Samuele. Sein Sohn, AUGUST SEBASTIANI (siehe Bild ganz oben rechts), und seine Frau SYLVIA kauften die Weinkellerei aus dem kleinen Estate-Imperium heraus und fingen an das Weingut auszubauen, neue Produktelinien zu kreieren und zu expandieren.

Nach dem Tod von August im Jahre 1980 übernahm seine Frau Sylvia und die 3 Kinder SAM, DON und MARY ANN SEBASTIANI die Führung des Weinunternehmens mit verschiedenen Weinlabels und Weinlinien, damals genannt TURNER ROAD VINTNERS. Schon bald erreichte die jährliche Weinproduktion unglaubliche 8 Millionen Weinkisten.

Sam schied 1986 aus und gründete sein eigenes Weingut südlich von Sonoma. 2001 entschied man sich die Wein-Hauptmarke & Zugpferd SEBASTIANI aus dem Turner Road Vintners-Unternehmen herauszunehmen und den Rest zu verkaufen. Nach der erfolgten Aufteilung des Familienimperiums schied auch Don Sebastiani aus und gründete sein eigenes Weingut Cecchetti-Sebastiani Cellars (jetzt Don Sebastiani & Sons). So lag nun die alleinige Leitung von Sebastiani Vineyards in den Händen von MARY ANN SEBASTIANI-CUNEO und ihrem Mann RICHARD CUENO.

Dann begann 2008 eine neue Sebastiani-Ära mit FOLEY FAMILY WINES-Besitzer BILL FOLEY (siehe grosses Bild rechts), der das Weingut SEBASTIANI VINEYARDS kaufte und seitdem - zusammen mit dem langjährigen (seit 1979) Winery-Winemaker MARK LYON (grosses Bild links) - neue Standards in Qualität und Marketing setzt.

Sebastiani Vineyards - Sonoma County California USA:
Located in the heart of Sonoma wine country, Sebastiani offers a historic winery with a hospitality center, barrel room with antique redwood tanks, grand event space and daily tours and tastings. Our tasting room bar is one of the most popular places to enjoy and learn about wine in Sonoma County. The atmosphere is always lively, casual and informative. In addition to the tasting bar, we also have additional special tasting experiences that delve deeper into wine history, food and wine pairing, winemaking techniques and the culture of wine. Hosted in our historic tasting room, these events showcase not only Sebastiani’s wines but also foods from some of Sonoma’s most celebrated chefs, cheese makers and chocolatiers.

Sebastiani’s first century in Sonoma winemaking began when Samuele emigrated from the Tuscany region of Italy in 1895 and started Sebastiani nine years later. A stonemason by trade, he quarry-mined the Sonoma hills for cobblestones that were used to build the streets of San Francisco. He worked long hours and saved carefully to buy land in Sonoma County, from which he would make wine for the Sonoma community and San Francisco’s restaurants.

The winery was the only one in Sonoma County to continue operations through Prohibition, making a small amount of sacramental and medicinal wines. It has been joked, and perhaps with some grain of truth, that during this time there was a resurgence of people becoming very religious.

Samuele believed in hard work and asked the same of everyone at the winery. At the same time, he was a strong supporter of the land and the people of Sonoma. When the combination of Prohibition and the Depression hit hard, Samuele initiated major projects at the winery to create employment for his neighbors. When there wasn’t sufficient work at the winery, he built around the plaza and constructed a skating rink, motel, theater and meeting hall at the Catholic Church. To keep people employed at the winery, Samuele began canning peaches, pears and nectarines.

Shortly after Samuele’s death in 1944, his son, August (pictured right), and August’s wife Sylvia purchased the winery from the estate and began the expansion of the facilities and the product line, adding new varietal wines and proprietary blends.

Always sporting his trademark bib overalls, August was recognized as one of America’s most skilled and innovative winemakers of the time. August was also known for his tireless devotion to birds and their preservation – as evidenced by his lifelong support of Ducks Unlimited and his collection of rare doves and black swans. He respected the craftsmen of Sonoma and made use of their skills at the winery; the famous hand-carved Sebastiani barrels, which are still on display at the winery, were completed by Earle Brown in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

When August died in 1980, Sylvia and their children, Sam, Don and Mary Ann, assumed management of the company. Sam stayed until 1986, when he left Sebastiani to start his own winery, south of the city of Sonoma.

The Sebastiani company’s biggest growth spurt came during this time. The family built a large-volume, Central Valley-based portfolio of value brands, collectively called Turner Road Vintners, while continuing to produce its Sebastiani-labeled wines. Production of Turner Road Vintners brands reached 8 million cases a year.

With the decision made to refocus on quality and the flagship Sebastiani brand, the family sold the Turner Road Vintners brands and winemaking facilities in March 2001 to Constellation Brands (formerly Canandaigua). When that sale was completed, Don Sebastiani left to devote full attention to Cecchetti Sebastiani Cellars (now Don Sebastiani & Sons), which he started with brother-in-law Roy Cecchetti in 1985. Mary Ann Sebastiani Cuneo, formerly senior vice president of hospitality and manager of the company’s real estate holdings – which include 700 vineyard acres, 225 of them planted -- assumed the role of president and CEO and helped lead the company through its transition into one of Sonoma County’s premier quality wine producers. She spearheaded the multi-million dollar remodel of the Sebastiani tasting room and hospitality center completed in 2001, offering unique cultural and historic programs for visitors. In addition, the production facility underwent major renovation with an emphasis on small-lot artisan winemaking.

Bill Foley purchased Sebastiani in 2008 and immediately took a number of steps to enhance wine quality and raise the winery’s image. Working closely with winemaker Mark Lyon and the viticultural team, Bill lowered production, restricted yields, acquired more new barrels and winemaking equipment, revamped farming protocols and acquired additional vineyards to guarantee consistent and superior fruit sourcing. Today, the winery is making the finest wines in its long history with emphasis on single-vineyard and sub-appellation wines.

VINEYARDS
Sonoma County is one of the most diverse wine growing regions in the world. As with most of California, our climate is influenced by the distance and exposure to the cold Pacific Ocean — areas near the water are cool, areas inland are warm. Sonoma also boasts incredibly complex soils ranging from volcanic along the Mayacamas Mountains to marine-based in all of the coastal locales. The patchwork of Sonoma’s climate, soils and topography influence where and how its vines are planted. When developing vineyards or sourcing fruit, we make sure the variety is perfectly matched to its region. While every individual site has its own distinct terroir, there are some overarching attributes we associate with each of Sonoma’s AVAs. Cool, maritime-influenced AVAs, such as Russian River Valley, the Sonoma Coast and Carneros, are superior locations for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Cusp regions like Dry Creek and Chalk Hill are great for Chardonnay, Zinfandel (mainly Dry Creek), Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. Warmer regions along the Mayacamas Mountains, including Alexander Valley, Knight’s Valley and parts of Chalk Hill and Sonoma Valley, are ideal for Bordeaux varieties.

Sonoma County History: Located about an hour north of San Francisco, Sonoma is bordered by the counties of Marin (south), Mendocino (north), Lake (northeast), Napa (east) and the mighty Pacific Ocean to the west. At 1,768 square miles, Sonoma County is larger than Rhode Island. The region`s first vines were established in 1812 by Russian colonists at Fort Ross on the Pacific coastline. By 1854, four years after California had achieved statehood, grapes were being planted in the Alexander Valley, Santa Rosa and the Valley of the Moon. Much of Sonoma County is devoted to open space and agriculture, giving it a natural unspoiled look and feel. As with most of California, the climate is influenced by the distance and exposure to the cold Pacific Ocean; areas near the water are cool, areas inland are warm. Sonoma features rolling hills and low mountains in the west, plains in the middle and the rugged Mayacamas Mountains in the east. There are streams, lakes, forests and meadows scattered throughout the diverse countryside. Sonoma County is perhaps the most diverse wine region in the world. The AVA has achieved success with all of the cold- and warm-climate varieties. Of the 1,131,520 total acres, 64,000 are planted to vineyards. Chardonnay is the most popular grape with more than 16,000 acres. Cabernet is second with 12,000 acres, The next three are Pinot Noir (10,000), Merlot (7,500) and Zinfandel (5,000).
