Zur Geschichte des Weinguts Standish Wine Company:
THE STANDISH WINE COMPANY wurde 1999 von DAN STANDISH (siehe Bild ganz oben links) gegründet. Er startete damals mit einer kleinen, familieneigenen Parzelle fast hundertjähriger Shiraz-Stöcke mitten im Herzen des Barossa Valley bzw. der Unterregion VINE VALE in Südaustralien. Er gehört zur sechsten Generation von Einwanderern, die sich 1848 hier niederliessen. In seiner Berufslaufbahn sammelte Winemaker & Oenologe Dan Standish nicht nur in seinem Heimatland Australien Erfahrungen, sondern auch in Kalifornien, Spanien und Frankreich. Seine Passion gilt den grossen Weinen des Rhonetals.

Seine sehr raren Weine sind allesamt aussergewöhnliche Persönlichkeiten. Sie stehen für Komplexität, Konzentration und Eleganz, niemals, wie der erste (optische) Eindruck glauben lässt, für übermässige Üppigkeit und Schwere. Sie stammen alle aus wurzelechten, also nicht gepfropften Reben, denn diese kleine Weinregion wurde glücklicherweise von der weltweiten Reblaus-Plage kaum betroffen. Die ältesten, die über hundertjährig sind, werden für den "Standish" und "Relic" verwendet. Die Weingärten stehen alle im Barossa Valley bis auf diejenigen für den Borne Bollene. Dise Weintrauben stammen aus dem Eden Valley, westlich von Barossa.

Dan Standish ist ein Verfechter von „hands-off and natural winemaking“ – einer möglichst natürlichen und traditionellen Vinifikation, bei der kaum oder gar nicht eingegriffen wird. Die Trauben werden von Fuss gestampft und in offenen Gärbehältern aus Holz mit traubeneigenen Hefen spontanvergoren. Mit alten Korbpressen wird schonend abgepresst. Der Ausbau erfolgt in gebrauchten Weinfässern aus französischer Eiche. Unterstützt wird Dan im Weinkeller tatkräftig von Winemaker FRASER McKINLEY (Bild Mitte 3. von oben).

Zusammen mit JAYSEN COLLINS (kleines Bild ganz unten rechts) ist Dan Standish auch der Winemaker der nahegelegenen MASSENA-Weine (auch in diesem Online-Weinshop), gegründet im Jahre 2000 auch im südaustralischen Barossa Valley.

The Standish Wine Company was created in 1999 when Dan Standish sourced a small parcel of Old Vine Shiraz from his parent’s vineyard in the heart of the Barossa Valley. The over 96-year old vines are planted on the typical sand over clay soil profile characteristic of Vine Vale the sub region of the Barossa Valley. With Dan’s enormous passion for the wines of the Rhone Valley in the south of France, it was natural evolution that the wines made would reflect the intrinsic styles of the Rhone. Formerly a Winemaker at Torbreck Vintners in the Barossa Valley, Dan carries a Degree in Chemical Engineering and has worked in the Napa & Sonoma Valleys in California, La Rioja in Spain and studied extensively the vineyards of the Rhone Valley in France.

Standish Wine Company is really just one man: Dan Standish, amongst the company of fine old-vine Barossa Shiraz grapes. The core of the Standish Wine Company resides in the fruit from his 1912- planted family owned vineyard in Vine Vale. The fruit goes into two cuvees: The Standish and The Relic. These wines are also joined by other outstanding vineyard fruit sources from throughout the North-West Barossa and Eden Valley, including fruit from the Fechner (Eden Valley), Laycock (Greenock), Schubert (Marananga), Nietschke, Helbig and Lehmann families.

2009 sees the release of all five cuvees for the first time, and they are definitive interpretations of old – vine Barossa Shiraz. Dan’s hands-off approach is all about letting the fruit speak: hand-picked, destemmed only, open ferments with wild yeasts, some in concrete eggs, gently basket pressed to French oak (15% new) The wines spend a minimum of two years on elevage with no racking, and are unfined and unfiltered into bottle.
